Our Focus Owl

When we only look at the surface, we miss the depth, complexity, and detail that make each person who they are.

For people who experience the world intensely or feel deeply, things are often far more layered than they first appear. This is especially true in behaviour support, where these very real experiences are often misunderstood or mislabelled.

This page shares the story behind Our Focus; the context, meaning, and intentions that shape who we are today. It is written for those who, like me, seek deeper understanding and value connection, authenticity, and growth.

How Our Focus began...

So, how did Our Focus begin?

In many ways, it began from a place of neurodivergent burnout. An honest recognition that, to support others well, I also needed an environment that supported me.

That meant creating something aligned with both personal and professional values: a workplace grounded in authenticity, ongoing learning, flexibility, meaningful professional development, and an accommodating environment where people could genuinely thrive.

The Meaning Behind the Name

The name Our Focus reflects two important ideas.

“Our” represents shared understanding and collaboration - centring a participant’s voice, respecting their unique needs, and walking alongside them as they navigate life and work toward their goals.

“Focus” comes from the idea of hyperfocus - a meaningful, enjoyable, and deeply immersive state of concentration that many neurodivergent people experience.
Together, these concepts shaped both my motivation and my approach, eventually lead-ing to the creation of a service that actively puts these values into practice.

The Story Behind The Logo

I’ve always been drawn towards what’s different and wanted something easy to recognise.

Years ago, I supported a young person who found expressive communication difficult. During a particularly challenging time, they used the company logo as a way to communicate and reconnect. Through that familiar symbol, their needs could finally be understood and responded to.

That experience stayed with me.

Helping people feel safe, seen, and understood through something simple and familiar is what we strive for at Our Focus

Why an Owl?

Owls have always made me smile (especially ones wearing glasses). I used to collect owl-themed things, so they naturally found their way into my life and eventually into the company itself.

Across many cultures, owls symbolise wisdom, transformation, intuition, growth, and self-discovery.

For me, the owl represents authenticity and meaningful change; two things that were central in my life when Our Focus began and that remain deeply embedded in our practice today.

In our logo, the owl is reading, reflecting a love for learning, curiosity, and the joy of special interests.

Why the Greens and Leaves?

The greens in our colour palette reflect my love of nature and plants, which are incredibly regulating for me personally.

Regulation supports co-regulation. When I feel grounded, I can better support my team, and together we can better support participants and their networks.

Green also creates a softer visual experience, which can be important for people who experience light sensitivity.

What We Strive To Create

Having a space where your unique needs, preferences, strengths, and values are genuinely understood and prioritised can feel life-changing.

Neurodiversity holds immense richness and depth, yet those experiences can feel isolating when they are not understood by others. Communicating them can also be difficult; not because they lack meaning, but because they are often deeply layered and shaped by a person’s traits, environment, experiences, and nervous system.

Authenticity, identity, and growth are deeply meaningful to me both personally and professionally, and these values are reflected in the way Our Focus has been built and continues to function day-to-day.

I hope that sharing this story offers a deeper understanding of the “why” behind our work, and of the depth and complexity that can exist beneath the surface of neurodivergent experiences.

Sometimes, when we slow down and look beyond what is immediately visible, we find connection, insight, meaning, and possibility.

My hope is that this page encourages you to better understand yourself, the people you support, and the broader neurodivergent community.

And perhaps, next time a neurodivergent person has a request that feels difficult to accommodate, instead of immediately asking “Can this be done?”, consider asking “Why might this matter so deeply?”

Because for some people, what appears small on the surface may carry comfort, regulation, identity, safety, or meaning underneath.

With warmth and kind regards,
The Founder of Our Focus
